CCL Faubel Celebrates its 170th Anniversary

Production of Booklet Labels at CCL Faubel

The machines at CCL Faubel are often custom-made, specially designed for the production of labels such as booklet labels, consisting of adhesive roll material and package inserts.

Thanks to small labels with big content, the Melsungen-based company has become a global player.

CCL Faubel has specialized in the labeling of pharmaceutical products for over 170 years. The company's history began in 1855 in Kassel with the "Faubel & Co. Cartonagen- und Papierwaaren-Fabrik". This later became "Faubel & Co. Nachfolger GmbH" until the Canadian group CCL Industries Inc. took over all shares in 2023. Since then, CCL Faubel has been part of the world's largest label manufacturer with over 200 production sites in more than 40 countries.

CCL Faubel GmbH currently employs over 280 people at its headquarters in Melsungen. The main product is booklet labels - multi-page labels that offer extensive information in a very small space. Since the end of the 1990s, these labels have become an international bestseller, tailored to the needs of the research-based pharmaceutical industry.

"We focused on this form of labeling almost 25 years ago. Today, we maintain our position as a global player with constant innovations in product and service," says Frank Jäger, who forms the management team together with Mathias Männel. The product portfolio now also includes smart labels with RFID and e-paper technology. These digital labels were originally developed for IMPs (Investigational Medical Products) whose expiry dates had to be updated. They are now used in logistics processes in a wide range of industries.

Center of Excellence

CCL Faubel's innovative strength has already been recognized by the parent company: the Melsungen site has been named the “Center of Excellence” for the entire “CCL Clinical” business unit. From here, CCL Faubel coordinates all activities in the field of clinical trials worldwide, passes on specialist knowledge to international production sites in the USA, Canada and Europe and sets global quality standards. In addition, CCL Faubel plays a leading role within the group for RFID developments in Europe.

Family Day in May

Frank Jäger is convinced: “Our success is based on the commitment of our employees - that's why we want to celebrate our 170th company anniversary together with them and their families.” In mid-May, CCL Faubel is hosting a family day at its headquarters in Melsungen.

A special highlight will be the traditional “Gautschen ceremony”, (a traditional initiation ritual for printers) in which trainees are symbolically accepted into the profession through a “water baptism” after passing their final examination. "This old letterpress custom dates back to the 16th century. Values such as tradition and community are still very important to us today," emphasizes Jäger.
